Juutinen, S., Huovinen, T., & Yalaho, A. (2011). Emotional Obstacle in E-learning-The fear of technology. International Journal for e-Learning Security (IJeLS), 1(2), 104-109.
Technophobia is a growing problem with the increased use of technology. While more and more teaching is transforming to online and blended methods, the more troubles will arise regarding usage, (Juutinen, Huovinen, & Yalaho, 2011). Some of the reluctance to computer usage has to do with the fear of the technology itself according to the authors. For some, the frustration with computers grows to the extent of developing technophobia. People can change these emotions through usage and learning this process is referred to as emotional learning as learning is not a purely cognitive phenomenon, (Juutinen, Huovinen, & Yalaho, 2011).
In most e-learning courses, the main learning device is the computer, with which every student have to work with and if they have fear or anxiety towards computers or any new technology, it makes their learning career difficult. The research results conclude that technophobia can cause troubles to students in e-learning. These students lack the basic computer and technology skills and they are reluctant to learn to use any new technology equipment or learning methods. Their emotions towards computers and e-learning systems are negative and problems is usage make them even worse.
This article should serve as a reminder to any instructor or instructional designer to remember the needs of their students and especially those with low computer skills or technophobia. Because learning today almost always requires some computer knowledge and use, we should ensure tutorials and proper coaching and support exist for those lacking these abilities. As they build confidence in their schools students are able to overcome this emotional obstacle and be successful if given the proper tools and support.
